I’m beyond convinced that the young minds behind the Copenhagen Institute for Interaction Design are not only modern day geniuses but new leaders in action. Check out this project that aims to let displaced persons express themselves through the Wii… and music (how do they come up with this stuff??):
Empowers the user through music; generated by a Wii Remote placed in the wearable, arm length sleeve…
Climate Refugees are often unable to return to their homes due to the changing weather. As a result they are crowded into refugee camps with few things to entertain themselves. Acclimatising Refugees addresses this issue through social interaction.
A wearable object for the arm, Acclimatising Refugees empowers the user through music. Through arm motions, the user generates music and sound, expressing cultural elements and sharing them with spectators. This action transcends language barriers and breaks the tension that might be found in a refugee camp, spreading the important sense of self expression.
A Wii Remote control is placed in the wearable sleeve, and through the motion of the arm, and the location of the remote control on the X,Y, and Z axis determines what sounds are output.

Learn about a CIID project that elaborates on the growing problem of pollution through a concept around the evolution of people to be able to filter the air and create a shelter around themselves, emphasizing the importance of connection/togetherness by clicking here.
Or, learn about the C.O.P Suit – an experiment in personal protest wear, designed to address the by now almost ritualised stand-offs between police and demonstrators; what has ironically been described as the ‘folk dance of disorder’ – by clicking here.
Or yet more: How about exploring ideas of personal, mobile power generation and kinetics. Dandelion is a wearable that captures energy from wind and human movement. It is a structure of miniature windmills that embraces the wearer. It is fashion that creates an interface between nature, technology, and people.
And, there’s Shared Skin: a shoulder-worn suit with embedded solar panels, enabling individual human beings to collect and store solar energy during their daily routine and to share that solar energy with one another through friendly gestures such as hugging, holding hands, and patting on each other’s backs.
W/Air: came from thinking about an extreme future where air will be so toxic that people will need always to carry oxygen mask. Instead of a classic oxygen mask we created a comfortable “breathing” necklace which filters and stores CO2 from air and provides O2 for the user. The stored CO2 will be used as a font of energy to be reused in everyday life.
