The book I’m currently reading, Sacred Journey of the Peaceful Warrior, outlines that what is human is actually an embodiment of three distinct beings: the Basic Self, the Conscious Self and the Higher Self. Each has its unique traits that are precious and valuable. The trick is to discern which traits to let guide you in any given situation, at any given time. Sometimes it’s more appropriate to lead with one, other times another. The supreme objective, of course, is to harmoniously lead with all three at once. I’ve gathered some attributes of each and would simply like to share:
Basic Self:
at home in the body with its feelings and impulses
wildness
fleshiness
energy in motion
seeks pleasure
avoids pain
act versus contemplate
primal instinct
child-like innocence
instinctive body presence/wisdom
motivated by primitive impulse
vital energy
emotion
little means to perceive refined beauty or faith
knows only good feeling and bad feeling
playful spirit
emotional energy
untamed
unrefined
body
natural instinct
Conscious Self:
untroubled by emotions or sentiment
see world with objectivity and icy calm
orderly
structured
robot
calculating
logic
expressionless
terribly limited
see world in shades of gray
beauty a category
seek what is useful and constructive
mind, immune to vagaries of emotion
computer-like
don’t really live
sterile world of problems and solutions
reason
logic
learning abilities
Higher Self:
faith
inspiration
