Last September many of my friends and several family members came together to contribute money toward a great effort that aims to give some of the poorest in Honduras a better life. I just received an update from those who accepted the donation: Billy and Mary Collins. The more than $1,000 raised helped one family pay for their new, cement home. The money also offset transportation costs so little Edwin could receive the heart surgery he so critically needed. Read the update below:
Dear Laura,
Sorry it has taken me so long to get you a picture of Edwin. I forgot to take it when they came by before the surgery. They brought him by a couple of weeks ago so I was able to get the attached photo. He is doing really good. The doctor told them that he has some type of eye problem but that he is going to talk to me about it. So, I need to give him a call to see what is going on.
After the surgery, they stayed several days at a house that is provided by the Rut Paz foundation so he could recuperate in a supervised/clean environment. The mother was very pleased with the attention they received. Since they have three older children, it was hard her being gone for a couple of weeks. But, the dad did a good job with help from the grandmother and others. I have not heard from them in over a week so that is a good sign that everything is going good.
Thanks again for all your help in making this operation possible for Edwin. A few nights ago a good friend came by to see us. Edwin is her cousin’s son. She knew that Edwin had a several heart problem but did not know what to do to get help for him. When she heard that he had heart surgery and that we had helped, she was so happy. While the operation was donated, they had transportation costs, meals, etc., plus there will be the follow-up visits. Your gifts make all this possible.
When will you be coming back to Copan Ruinas? Please let us know. It would be so neat if you could meet Edwin and his parents.
God Bless,
Mary
