Couchies Get Covered on NYTimes.com

The wonderful world of Couchsurfing.com has recently been featured on the NYTimes.com blog Frugal Traveler. The blog post accurately portrays how Couchsurfing members look for more than just a free couch. The community, which has recently passed the million member mark, also demonstrates how “There’s more to love out there than to fear.”

New York City subway cars are not exactly known as good spots for communal gatherings. But the No. 7 train that trundled out of Times Square one recent Saturday afternoon was crammed with chummy straphangers with a common purpose. The riders, who clambered over one another to snag pizza slices from a folding table while a musician strummed a guitar, were all members of CouchSurfing.com.

These 80-odd people are perhaps more accustomed to unorthodox environments than your average subway rider. CouchSurfing is a social-networking Web site that lets travelers link up with like-minded people all over the world who have a couch, spare bedroom, patch of open floor or backyard to offer — absolutely free. Charging for accommodations is forbidden, making it perfect for frugal travelers. The five-year-old site, run primarily by volunteers, fosters an atmosphere of cultural exchange and friend-making, all while fighting the impression that it’s solely for the backpacker set.
