Foto Flashback: The Ancient Artists of Angkor Wat

Daybreak at the Angkor Wat ruins. Awe.

The shifting hues of morning silhouetting an ancient world. The Khmer reigned this exotic kingdom 1700 years ago. Can you fathom that?

As the light slowly crept into the intricate crevices of this ancient realm, sweet memories of childhood came flooding back to me.

Sea. Sand. Beach. Drizzly sand-castles.

I chuckled as I thought how, from afar, these Tomb Raider ruins reminded me of the drizzly sand-castles my mom taught me to make at the sea’s edge.

Creeping closer to the ruins though, I gasped. It seemed as if every centimeter of the ruins was covered in delicate, hand-carved detail. A far cry from a drizzly sand-castle, this was a masterpiece of epic scale. Not only an expression of order and civilization, but also one of art and expression. The walls of this ancient kingdom really could speak. They told of the seductive Aspara, the ancient Khmer goddesses. Warriors reenacted great battles.

The tales of the Khmer were spun with rock.

Such an intricately ornate creation is lost to our modern world of towering skyscrapers. A quiet melancholy washed over me as I knew that the humans of our fast-paced world would never dedicate such time and expertise to their own walls of civilization. And to think these now dilapidated chambers and crumbling halls were carved by slaves. They should be remembered as artists.

Waiting

In this technology-driven world of globalization, waiting can often be considered as a negative, as synonymous with unproductive and lazy. But in less developed parts of the world, waiting is simply a fact of life. Waiting for the bus, waiting in line… just waiting. And, when surrounded by the rustic beauty characteristic of developing nations, waiting is a gift. It is a precious moment in the day where you can meditate, reflect and appreciate.

Underground

What if puddles were more than just reflections? What if they were portals to a parallel world? What if going underground meant delving into a new dimension?

Tuning Pegs

*This photo is the rare example that falls under the classification of photo art rather than a pure photograph. Normally, I adhere to strict editing standards with my photography, merely fine tuning (no pun intended) details such as contrast and the occasional lens dust. However, sometimes a subject I’ve photographed inspires me to experiment further. Photographs that have been manipulated beyond photographic standards will be always be clearly marked as photo art.

Bend the imagination just a pinch and you gain new perspectives on the everyday cityscapes that surround you. This structure can be found in Kansas City, MO. Some call them the UFO Towers. I see futuristic guitar tuning pegs.

Mayan Vista

Imagine a world where even life’s chores are rich experiences meant to be merrily anticipated and appreciated. It is a romantic idea of the Mayan life, but, for me, this frozen moment paints an idea of little want yet much wealth. The daily duties of life are not kept within the confines of a manufactured standard. Rather, they are left for the open air – before a simply framed vista crafted by God. The chore is a community affair, where neighbors gather to swap gossip as their clothes swash in the communal pila.

If doing my own laundry was synonymous with such a relaxed moment of meditation while gazing upon this vista, I imagine I wouldn’t begrudge the duty…

I Am Maya

Sometimes it is simplicity that speaks loudest. One Maya woman and a simple yellow wall says it all.

I consider this capture to be my signature photograph for Guatemala. It most certainly represents much of what drew me back to the “Land of Eternal Spring” after that first visit in November and December of 2008. I was blessed enough to spend another seven months in Guate during 2009. This image and others like it are branded upon my heart – my beloved Guatemala still calls to me. I am certain that our affair is not over.
